An Interview with Acting Classes In Perth:
Recently we sat down with Loren, the head acting teacher at Acting Classes In Perth and asked him a few questions about his acting school. We hope you enjoy!
Interviewer: Tell us a little bit about Acting Classes In Perth.
Loren: Acting Classes In Perth is now the largest growing acting school in Western Australia for beginner and intermediate actors. We've been running now for five years and as the acting school has grown, we've developed. We used to be called Screen Actors Online. but in early 2009 we re-branded as Acting Classes In Perth and refined what we did and how we did it. Since then the school has become a bit of a legend among aspiring actors in the local acting community. Our focus is very much tailored towards building a strong acting community here in Perth, because as everyone in Perth says, we have so much talent, yet they keep moving over east or over seas.
Interviewer: What kind of people attend your acting classes?
Loren: You, the guy or girl next door. Bob from the local bakery who's 26 and looking for a fun outlet or Sarah who's in her late 40's and looking to get social again after raising her children. Our classes attract everyday people from all works of life. We work with 14 year old teenagers in school studying drama right through to our oldest student who was 76. In fact here are some stats on our students:
Interviewer: Why do you do what you do?
Loren: Because I couldn't imagine doing anything else. For me Acting Classes In Perth is more than just a job. It's an opportunity to meet some amazing people who are taking in most cases a massive step in their lives. I love watching, supporting and being apart of the students growth, even if its just over the duration of one weekend beginner acting course. I have been privileged to work with some very talented people who didn't even know that they had a talent for acting because they had always been to scared to give it ago. Its really interesting because I have many of our students say that they came across our website and really wanted to do our beginner acting course but couldn't click the enrol button. They said that the page stayed open for like, three or four days in some cases, and then one day they took a deep breath and hit the application button, and filled out the form. Then they released that they had this innate passion for acting and a pile of talent that had been sitting there for years. And out enrollment button isn't even that scary. I will get a copy and give it to you to show on your blog if you like?

Interviewer: How often do your acting courses run?
Loren: It depends on the course. We are now running our 2-Day Acting For Film & TV Workshop for beginners every six weeks. However in early 2013, this will be revised to every four weeks as the courses are currently filling up rather fast. We also have a wide selection of other acting courses for beginners and intermediate students and they can vary in frequencies depending on the season and what industry teachers are available. As a general rule of thumb, we are currently running an intermediate acting course every two months. These intermediate courses vary from character based performance courses to industry casting style courses for the more intermediate actor. I think it's really important to provide students with opportunity to meet and network with local Perth film crews like casting directors, producers, directors and casting agents. Oh and if you are a little unsure of the difference between a casting agent and a casting director you can head to our blog where we recently did a video blog on the topic. You can check it out at: http://www.actingclassesinperth.com/blog-002-casting-directors-vs-casting-agents.html. Interviewer: What advice do you have for anyone who is interested in an acting career?
Loren: Great question. The first thing I would say to people is - breath. Don’t think “I don’t know if I can do this. I'm not sure if I can be an actor”, because you can do this! Trust enough in yourself first and foremost. I would then say I think it's incredibly important to learn the craft of acting. Acting is all about reacting and understanding the human mind. So start watching people and how they interest with the world and with themselves. I think an actor on a daily basis must constantly question the world in which they exist. I often say to actors the magic word is 'why' and when you can answer that with details you will have a detailed character. I also think that you have to love acting. If you don’t enjoy it and you don’t love it, then you shouldn’t do it - just like anything in life. If it starts to become a drag, and “Oh, I’ve got lines to learn” and “I’ve got to go and do another audition tomorrow”, then just stop doing it because your negative energy is being projected on to other people, not only on-set but also onto the other actors who are around you off-set. Do it while you love it, then if you ever stop loving it, leave. In between that time you will have learnt so much about yourself, life and it will all be worth it.
Interviewer: I noticed that you have a rather large facebook community.
Loren: Yeah, we have built a place for local actors and film makers to come together and meet. Its been fantasic because we currently have over 4,250 people following our Acting Classes In Perth Facebook Page. And being facebook it is a great place for the team and students to post some very funny photos.
Interviewer: Why do you think Acting Classes In Perth has become the leading acting school in Perth?
Loren: We are lucky enough to have seen quite a few other acting schools in Perth come and go, over the past couple of years and I think that we have been able to embed ourselves as the first choice because of a few reason. I guess the first would be our commitment to our students and their growth. I think other acting schools are maybe run more as a short term business venture rather than a long-term community base, and I feel because of the community we have build we have been able to provide consistent quality training, and we will I think for years to come. I also have a feeling that ego plays a large part in other schools, trying to bank off the prestige of past students who have made some great success for themselves for the ego of the teachers maybe. It's hard to say because I have never attended these schools, and I am only going of what many of our students who have been to these schools and return to us have said. A core belief at Acting Classes In Perth is that the 'student is key'. All of our courses, and operating practices are there to provide the best service and training for students even is that cuts into our bottom line.
Interviewer: What is the best course fir a beginner?
Loren: Our most popular and by far the best course that a beginner (that's someone who has done little or no acting in the past) should attend is our 2-Day Acting For Film & TV Workshop for beginners. This course is structured to be fun, creative and very supportive. It is also a load of fun. I feel the best way to learn is through a fun and creative environment so that's how we do it at Acting Classes In Perth. In fact we have made it a guarantee. If our 2-Day Acting For Film & TV Workshop for beginners in not the most fun course you have ever done, then we will give you a refund on the spot at the end of the course, no ifs, butts or maybes. The truth be told we have only ever had two people ask for a refund and we issued it then and there. We are so sure that we are willing to put it on the line, because at the end of the day, if you don't enjoy the course and you come to us on the final day and ask for a refund I think it is only fair. We would rather a happy refunded customer than an unhappy non-refunded customer. Our ethics extent beyond the bottom line, but enough about business, lets get back to acting.
Interviewer: Do you have any great success stories?
Loren: I would actually consider most of our students success stories. I guess we need to define success. You see most of the students who attend our acting courses are very nervous because this is a big step for them, and yet by the end of the beginner course, they are all very different people. More relaxed and exhausted from laughing so much. I consider these acting students success stories because they did something that was very scary and overcame fears. I am not one for taking glory for others actions, so if you would like to read our student testimonials you can visit: http://www.actingclassesinperth.com/testimonials.html for a very large list of students and their thoughts on our acting classes.
